Japanese style tofu steak. Tofu steak is a simplified version of agedashi tofu, a traditional Japanese recipe with deep-fried tofu served in a dashi-based broth. In this version the tofu is pan-fried, using less oil, and instead of pouring a large amount of mild dashi-based sauce over it, the steak is drizzled with a little bit of strong dashi shoyu sauce (substitute with regular soy sauce in a pinch). I served the Tofu Steak with bok choy, brown rice, and a sweet soy sauce dressing to make it healthy and nutritious.

The flavor in question for this baked tofu recipe is due, in large part, to a spice blend. Loaded with cumin, chili powder, garlic and paprika (among others), this spice blend is mixed with a little olive oil and water and spread on the tofu steaks. It's not quite a marinade, and not quite a dry rub - although there are elements of both. Completely drain the tofu and blot dry with a paper towel. Cut into two slices and dredge in flour.
